No other club anywhere in the world has managed the feat as many times, and it underlines just how dominant Al-Ahly have been over Egyptian football across the second half of the 20th century and into the modern era, a period during which they’ve also built one of the fiercest rivalries on the continent with Zamalek in the Cairo Derby.

 

Benfica (1977-78): Unbeaten and Still Runners-Up

Not every unbeaten season ends with a trophy. Benfica went through the entire 1977-78 Primeira Liga campaign without losing a match, yet still finished second, edged out by Porto purely on goal difference. Bayer Leverkusen (2023-24): Germany’s First

No Bundesliga club had ever gone through a full league season unbeaten until Bayer Leverkusen did it under Xabi Alonso in 2023-24, winning the club’s first ever Bundesliga title in the process. The achievement was part of an even bigger run: Leverkusen went 51 matches unbeaten across all competitions that season, a European record, before finally losing to Atalanta in the Europa League final and narrowly missing out on a continental treble.
